Adding a home Wireless router for the iPhone

19 September 2009 No Comment

AT&T’s 3G wireless network undoubtedly experiences some fairly intense load during the day from heavy iPhone usage. I have heard rumors of network speeds in large cities, such as Seattle having severely decreased download and upload speeds because there are so many users of the network. Page load times in Olympia, WA were not the best. The iPhone also has the ability to utilize a wireless access point for connectivity. My wife and I decided to purchase a wireless router for out home specifically for our phones. A couple of months back, I hard wired most rooms in the house with Cat6. Until iPhone comes out with a mini-usb/ethernet adapter, wire is the way to go! After connecting the cheapest Belkin wireless router possible ($30), we achieved continued connection speeds 5x normal. Take a look at before and after for our phones.

Before the wireless router, SpeedTest.org results were 1189 kb/s download and 333 kb/s upload.

After the wireless router, SpeedTest.org results were 5309 kb/s download and 2404 kb/s upload.
