Comcast business class router and Smart Packet Detection

31 December 2009 No Comment

2 days ago, I started having problems connecting to my domains and ip address from work. Also, while at home, I was unable to connect to my work ip for remote network administration. We both have the same Comcast router/modem hardware. I tried connecting from home and work over ssh, port 80, and others without success. I checked and double-checked my firewall and other super sneaky software for fending off the nasties, on both ends, without success.

I called Comcast and spoke with 2 representatives about the issue. After Comcast informed me that my static ip was in fact a DHCP block address (a totally different story all together), the representative told me that my Comcast issued hardware had Smart Packet Detection enabled. The representative told me that the hardware comes with this option enabled by default and that it causes more problems than it fixes. Somehow or another, this little checkbox was unchecked. Here is how it should look.

Of course, your firewall choices are up to you, but the middle form checkbox is the real key here.
