Dropbox – free online backup utility

27 June 2009 One Comment

It is not often that I am impressed with an online backup utility. However, Dropbox online sync and backup utility has done just that. Dropbox is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Registration does not require validation and is uber quick. Once you register, download and install the .deb file and you are on your way. The installation file, a .deb with Ubuntu 8.04, is simple a script to download the real program. It took all of a a minute to download and install.

The installation of your sync folder defaults to your /home/username/Dropbox location. It can be changed to an alternate location if you choose. To backup or sync a file, simply place data into your /home/username/Dropbox folder and Dropbox automatically syncs your data. As a test, I place several image files and a folder with images into the Dropbox folder. My Dropbox home says that I have 2.3GB of storage available. One second later, the files showed up online and synchronized. Wow! Super easy and all for the right price – FREE.

Files are synchronized and ready to go!

I invited two additional users to Dropbox and I received an additional 500MB of storage for free. This application continues to be the best app that I have used in quite a while!
