Google Voice overview and signup request
Since reading about Google’s acquisition of Gizmo5, I have been more than curious about Google Voice. Google Voice’s service allows you to use your current number or a Google assigned number to make free calls within the U.S.
Google does not replace your existing lines and you do not have to cancel your other service. You can continue to use your existing phone carrier (AT&T, Verizon). Summarily, calls are conducted in several ways.
1. Using your computer, visit the Google Voice website (Click2Call) and enter the number that you want to call. Google will call you at the specified number and connect the call for you.
2. Visit the Google Voice mobile site and complete the same protocol as listed above.
3. Call your own Google Voice number and log into your Google Voicemail system.
In other words, you have to tell Google that you want them to call you back and connect you to a certain telephone number. It is an extra step in making a call, however if your current carrier contract is only for your local coverage area and you want to call across the U.S., Google Voice has the potential for opening up the telephone market.
