Google Voice Transcription: Is it accurate?
Google Voice (GV) is an invite only service for now, but from the scores of blog posts circulating around the web I suspect the participants are ever increasing. One of the great features of GV is the voicemail transcription. Upon receiving a voicemail, you can opt to receive a trasncript sent to your email. I decided to test the transcription skills of Google’s programmers!
Transcription Test 1: Busy Restaurant
The first test occurred inside a busy restaurant. I had my wife call and leave me a message. GV accurately transcribed around 20% of the entire message. However, after listening to the recording, the message was somewhat of a challenge for me as well. Here the message awaits me in my Inbox.
If you read the transcription, it goes something like this, “So, Hi Mark, I just wanted to call me if you have 3 self message about either talk to you both the flask kind and that bye. We’re at yahoo of right now and expertise and I have 3 for are on that those people. I’m going to move, but we’ll figure that out of work. Okay bye.”
Transcription Test 2: Traveling in a car on the highway
The final test occurred while traveling at around 50mph on a coastal highway. If you want to be specific, I was driving a Ford Escape. The message was several characters shorter than the first, but GV nailed the message spot on.
Conclusion
Google Voice had some difficulty transcribing my wife’s message in the restaraunt. After listening to the playback recording in my Google Voice Inbox, I would find it difficult to capture the complete accuracy of the conversation. The second voicemail message was recorded inside a moving vehicle. This scenario is likely fairly common for someone leaving a message. GV was spot on.
I am saitsfied with the results overall. Even though the restaraunt message was not completely transcribed, I score the work 6/10 for effort and the piece that it did complete accurately. Message were received in my email Inbox no more than 60 seconds after the hangup. Not bad Google. Thanks!
