Move windows buttons to right side in Ubuntu

14 May 2010 No Comment

The majority of computer users today are used to the window buttons on the right-hand side of the window. When Ubuntu v.10.04 was released, Canonical did a switcheroo and placed the buttons to the left-hand side instead. This tutorial will show you how to move them back to the right side and reorganize your buttons to your liking.

Step 1: using  your keyboard, push Alt-F2

Step 2: type in gconf-editor

Step 3: use the tree navigation and find apps > metacity > general. Find the line that says button layout

Step 4: the position of the semi-colon in the statement dictates the side of the window pane that the buttons find their home. For example, you will notice that the semi-colon is on the left-hand side of the statement, as are the buttons. To change the buttons location, click in the statement and simple move the semi-colon to the other side of the statement as seen below.

If you would like to re-arrange your buttons, simple move the words around (i.e. minimize, maximize, close). Remember, no spaces between the words.
