The latest kernel version 3.X had some surprising increases in participation from the major software vendors. The latest increases to the Linux Kernel added a whopping 113,000 lines. In this latest kernel release, LWN was able to detect 184 companies that contributed the the 3.X development cycle.

Out of the more active companies to contribute, Microsoft increases their participation to a ranking of #7. This large increases of commits amounts to approximately 4% of the overall kernel changes. If you analyze Microsoft participation by the number of lines changed, that number drops to 1.3%. Last year, Microsoft did not even make it on the list for kernel contributions.
